NPSTC Creates Working Group to Address T-Band Relocation Issues (7/23/12)
The National Public Safety Telecommunications Council (NPSTC) created a T-band working group. The FCC is required to recover and auction the public safety T-band spectrum within nine years under the D block reallocation bill that passed in February.

The T-band spectrum is a key resource used by public safety and industrial/business licensees in 11 large metropolitan areas. With Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Emergency Communications (OEC) and Office for Interoperability and Compatibility (OIC) support, the new group will research the issues arising from this legislation including where those in the T-band would relocate.

Four task groups will assess the effects on public safety, evaluate potential options, and determine the viability and costs of those options. Task group 1 will inventory and characterize public-safety operations and equipment in the T-band. Task group 2 will identify and analyze potential alternative spectrum options and review available spectrum and current spectrum. Following the completion of these tasks, task group 3 will determine the viability of each option by metro area as appropriate, and task group 4 will develop recommendations from the above output.
