ODN Tests Satellite Backhaul with Motorola Console (8/1/12)
ODN, a provider of satellite-based solutions, successfully completed end-to-end testing of the Motorola Solutions MCC 7500 command-and-control solution with ODN's satellite backhaul trunks on the STARCOM21 network for the state of Illinois.

The solution now allows public-safety networks to use ODN's satellite network as a prime or backup link on the console to handsets, in case of catastrophic loss of T1s or microwave because of natural disasters or terror attacks.

"We'll be able to provide connectivity of the MCC 7500 to handsets through ODN's network with minimal latency, a critical redundant architecture in case of loss of our T1 network,” said Doug Phelps from Motorola Solutions. “The conversation was as good as terrestrial backhaul.”

The ODN satellite technology was custom designed for two-way radio networks and includes direct dial telephones with data access, available virtually anywhere.

“We believe this is the first time ever that a console solution has been connected and communicating with handset devices over a satellite network,” said Greg Heifner, ODN principal and founder. “This opens a whole new system architecture with added reliability of satellite backhaul.”
