Bus Company Receives 1-Year Narrowbanding Waiver (8/2/12)
First Group America (FGA) was granted a one-year narrowbanding compliance waiver for its private LMR (PLMR) operations until Jan. 1, 2014. FGA has a fleet of about 50,000 school buses across 600 locations and transports about 6 million students each day. The company plans to replace 12,000 radios and reprogram 18,000 radios under the mandate.

The FCC said that FGA presented sufficient facts to meet the high standard for the waiver. In addition, the commission said the waiver won’t harm neighboring systems because FGA identified no interoperability or interdependency with other radio systems.

Without the waiver, the mandate could possibly disrupt FGA's communications and put children's safety at risk.
