D.C. Deploys Enterprise Management System for Public Safety (8/15/12)
The District of Columbia Office of Unified Communications (OUC) selected Smith Micro Software’s enterprise connection management solution for deployment by the DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPDC), the 10th largest U.S. police agency.
OUC provides centralized, districtwide management of public-safety voice radio technology and other wireless communications systems and resources. Tasked with handling almost 2 million 9-1-1 calls in the District of Columbia each year, the OUC handles call traffic from the MPDC, Fire and Emergency Medical Services (FEMS) and customer service operations, as well as oversees all land and mobile radio systems tied to the response network.
“The Office of Unified Communications selected Smith Micro’s Mobile virtual private network (VPN) solution to enable our public-safety partners to stay connected while in the field,” said Jennifer Greene, OUC director. “We needed a reliable connection solution that allows access to data over a secure mobile broadband network. The Smith Micro QuickLink Mobility solution offers a seamless transition between commercial mobile and secure Wi-Fi, as well as a platform for multiple operating systems.”
The software incorporates authentication for mobile systems that provide compliance with Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) access requirements. Smith Micro collaborated with OUC to ensure that police officers in the field could maintain seamless access to all 3G and Wi-Fi connections from mobile devices in their vehicles, with persistent access to back-office applications through a simple user interface.
