Report Examines Amateur Radio for Emergencies (8/22/12)
The FCC released a report with recommendations and impediments to the uses of amateur radio service during emergencies and disaster relief. The report follows a request for comment as part of the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012.

Recommendations include ensuring that amateur radio operators who volunteer to assist in emergency communications during disasters be knowledgeable about the procedural framework that guides emergency response. The FCC said the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Emergency Communications (OEC) would be qualified to work with the amateur radio community on training and credentialing policies.

Impediments outlined in the report include private land use restrictions, burdensome municipal restrictions on antenna height, superfluous permitting and inspection processes, local regulations regarding texting and cell operation while driving that don’t exempt amateur radio and public ignorance of the benefits of amateur radio contributions.

The full report is available here.
